It is important that the interview room is prepared beforehand to ensure there are no interruptions and that the tables and chairs are set up suitably. It is also important to decide what stages the recruitment process will include, such as:
First interviews – how many, when and who will carry them out?
Second interviews – when, and who will carry them out?
Any type of tests, such as skills reviews or psychometric tests;
When will candidates know the results of the interview process.
Conducting successful interviews
Establishing effective communication between the interviewer and candidate is crucial to conducting successful interviews. Those conducting the interview must ensure that the candidate understands the interview format and indicate if notes will be taken.
Candidates should be given the opportunity to talk honestly about themselves and their experience. This can be achieved through building a rapport with candidates by active listening, positive body language and allowing time for questions. However, one of the biggest issues that interviewers face is keeping the interview on track. The skill is to take control and bring candidates back to the original question (if it wasn’t answered) and to remind them gently about the interview format.
Keeping notes is useful, especially if interviewing a considerable number of candidates. Note that it is likely that future legislation will lead to interview notes being available to candidates at their request.
